Small Teton River = Big Fish

On the way to my in-laws house, I always drive over this small river called the Teton River. I never see anyone fishing it. I had my pole with me and decided to cast a few. It was cold, windy, and not particularly fun, when I got this monster bite! Unfortunately no fish. Now sold on this little river/creek, I spent another 20 minutes casting when I felt a huge tug and my pole bent way down. This fish put up a great fight and turned out to be a 20 inch Cutthroat. Not bad for driving out to my in-laws! I was using the same lure I used before, the small gold metal fish with a red tip on the nose. It was about 5:00 pm, down the street from the shell station in Rexburg.---Casey

Fishing the Snake

I fished the Snake River this morning, just as the sun came up. I fished at Lorenzo bridge just off the highway. Thanks to a local fisherman who gave me one of his lures, I was able to catch 3 browns. I don't know what the lure is called just yet, but it worked really well (compared to my lures anyways). The browns were about 14 inches.---Casey

Rexburg Fishing Ponds

The ice has melted off one of the ponds at the Rexburg nature park. The goldfish weren't biting but the trout certainly were! I pulled out 15 trout in about an hour and a half. Most were around 12-13 inches but one of them was 16 inches. I was using a "Worden Triple Teaser" gold with an orange tip.

After I took a picture of the larger fish, the fish unhooked itself and landed on the ground. I placed it in the water and let it relax for minute and then I let it go. Rather than swim away, it started acting crazy. It turned around and tried to come up the bank. I pushed it away from the shore and it promptly flipped over and died. I noticed a few people walking by who were also watching this upside down fish in the water. Shocked by this odd experience, I decided to start fishing some more. Ten minutes later, I decided to check on the dead fish. Sure enough, it was in the same spot upside down. I decided to poke it with my pole like a little kid with a pole should. As soon as I poked it, it swam away without any side effects. First time I have ever seen a fish play dead! Maybe it had a concussion when it fell?

I'll try my luck on the snake river south fork next----

My first catch on the Provo River

In our second trip to the Provo River, Matt and I did as good as we could have expected. We went early in the morning before work to the Lower Provo. The day before we went into a sporting goods store to ask some questions about fishing on the Provo. We wanted to try some flies, even though we use spinning rods. We picked some up and were ready to slay them on the Provo. We tried a couple of spots where we could park and access the water, as we didnt know where we were going. After getting snagged a million times we decided to move on and finally we found a spot where the fish were jumping and it was deep enough that we wouldnt catch moss and sticks every cast. We each tried some lures first without any luck at all. I decided to throw on my black wooly bugger that I bought the day before with some split shot about 16 inches up from the fly. On my second cast I hooked up on the beauty that you see here. I released him back and by that time it was too freezing to keep fishing and we had to get to work anyway. A successful trip to the Provo.
